framing
We offer an advisory service on the framing and hanging of work. At the atelier we have refined a technique of framing using paper and created a contemporary paper-frame which is particularly suited to works on paper. This frame is made entirely of paper and is robust and durable.
Framing is done using acid-free materials. The preservation and conservation of the work to be framed is paramount. We take into account the type of artwork to be framed and advise accordingly. Whenever two surfaces come into close contact for any period of time, their respective molecules cause a chemical reaction, which results in marks or damage to the print. Museum quality framing uses the best available materials throughout the frame’s construction to prevent any long term chemical deterioration of the artwork. Working to museum & exhibition framing standards is vital to artwork conservation, and adds to the longevity of a piece for years to come. Museum glass is also one of the options offered – this superior quality glass is anti-reflection and has an in-built UV protection.

Printing
The main feature of the atelier is the Press Fleury which comes from the atelier Georges Leblanc in Paris. It was a gift from the last owner and master printer of the atelier, Pierre Lallier. Custom built for l’atelier Leblanc, the press is over 200-years old.
This historic atelier was founded in 1793 by Jean-Charles Rémond at the heart of the Latin Quarter in Paris’ 5th arrondisement at 15 rue Saint-Jacques. Since the XVth century the Rue Saint-Jacques has been central to French publishing and the edition. In 1880, the atelier was moved to 187 rue Saint-Jacques and remained there until its doors shut in 2009. Throughout the atelier Leblanc’s history it has witnessed some of the most ambitious printing projects undertaken, to name but a few – Napoléon’s Description of Egypt, the floral albums of Redouté, prints, reviews and books by Rodin, Pissarro, Cassatt, Manet, Degas, Munch, Matisse, Villon, De Staël, partnerships with the Chalcographie du Louvre…
The press is in perfect working condition. It has taken up residence at the atelier and is now printing editions by South African artists.
